Several years during my career, I found myself in the position of being thought of as the boss' "favorite". In fact, those years saw me winning top awards for performance, not only in extravagant trips but in pay bonuses as well.
I used to examine myself quite seriously and ask whether or not I was "kissing up" to my boss and I grew extremely depressed whenever I would overhear co-worker comments that alluded to it. The fact was I was only trying to do a good job and earn a good day's pay. I found myself, upon occasion, actually avoiding my boss to make sure that nobody thought of me as a brown-noser. Some days, I even let my efforts grow lax because of the dilema I faced. It wasn't easy for me.
I have come to the conclusion that what I misunderstood many times was the position that a boss holds. If you are the boss, who will you choose to do special projects? One whom you can trust and whom you know will succeed and complete the project on time? Or, will it be one whom you know will whine, complain and mess things up?
Certain things these days have made me think of God and the choices of people He made to do certain great things. It wasn't because those people were great or because they had any "super powers". God chose his people very carefully knowing that He could trust them and that they would hold true to His purposes. From Job to Moses, from Peter to Abraham, from Noah to Joseph, we see individuals who were unwavering in their faith and loyalty even in their faults. Was the Apostle Paul a brown-noser?
Before we go "blaming" a person for being the boss' favorite, before we go blaming the boss for "playing favorites", I think we should take a very long, hard look at ourselves. What are our motives and what are our intentions? How loyal are we to our company and how much do we want to see it succeed? Does our boss see this or know it? How much do we know about our boss and how worthy is our boss of our efforts? Is our co-worker and boss, whom we are criticising, actually selfish people only looking out for themselves or are they truly just trying to help the company succeed?
Pray about it. The answers will come.

Brown Nos er! That's me. Guess what I am saying that I to found in my past and even now faced in situation where I am over looked as a brown nos er! I say who cares! Not to long ago a family member hurt my feelings and not knowing they did! I came across bragging on things I was doing at my church and used a word phrase the go to guy! Two things happened that day! Not only was my feelings hurt and to be honest rightfully so, but I to came to a understanding that some of us meaning me explain or come across in ways that others do not see it! I truly was that day expressing myself as one who had the knowledge of getting things done and was willing to get it done, but said it in the wrong way! What I am saying is you are so right! The word misunderstanding is a key factor here! Two many times we point at one when we should look at ones self first, after all when you point at one you have three fingers pointing back at you do you not? My career as a firefighter was a good one! I did my job above and beyond the call of duty and there were times I to was looked as a favorite and many times the word suck ass, and even brown nos er came into play! Yes I to backed away at times too! I look back and realize that the boss chose that go to guy because he or she new the job would get done and the same holds true when it comes to my now Christian walk! When you hire a carpenter to build you something like a house or shelf or what ever it takes certain tools to do the job correct and to create a master peace! To me Jesus is my master carpenter and I am a tool of his to do what he wants me to! I ask or you perfect? Well are you? Perfect to me is when you do your vary best of what you do! It is when you look at ones self and say I did my best and could walk away of what you did know you did your best without a feeling of short cuts! Not everyone can do as good as others or are smart as others! But even with that in mind if they do there vary best and know they tried as hard and best they could then they are perfect! This is what our Lord wants us to do is it not? To do the vary best one can and to come to His understanding and not our own! Even his disciples made mistakes but all in al they did what was done because it is simply put with the understanding that our lives our laid out before we were even conceived! I say call me a brown nos er or suck ass or what ever! If it takes that for me to do a job that Christ wants and will get me into heaven to have ever eternal life so be it! I want you to know I love you brother and as continue to come to understand God's way the more I come to see my coworkers , friends and even family members in a much better way! Meaning that I did judge them all at one time or another! Both Good , Bad and now when is see or look at them I realize I am not a judge! I am to love them and accept them! I am to go and serve my Lord and let him worry about who is a brown nos er or not or what ever! I know I am perfect at what I do only because I do my best when I do it! This is not bragging! And no I am not the best when writing or even smart as others or even building thing etc. Just saying I do my best and I choose to use a simple word called per fact to illustrate doing my best. Take care and know I relate to what you wrote and just wanted to express my feelings on the matter. love Phil
